How to Build a Turtle Trap From Plywood
Trapping turtles can be difficult. Whether you are trying to eradicate the turtles from your lake to protect other wildlife they are preying upon, or attempting to catch the turtles for cooking, a simple fishing line will not be enough to battle the strong turtle jaws. By anchoring a strong wire base to some buoyant plywood, you can rig a turtle trap that will stand up to the strongest turtles, and will alert you to a catch as it dips slightly below the water.
Things You'll Need
- Large fishing hook
- Metal wire, 12 inches long
- Twine, 6 feet long
- Tough meat
- Plywood board, one foot by one foot
- Drill
Instructions
-
-
1
Create a loop at one end of the wire two inches from the top, and wrap the remaining portion of the two inches around the rest of the wire repeatedly to secure the loop.
-
2
Thread the other end of the wire two inches through the eye of the large hook, and secure it by wrapping the two inches around the neck of the hook repeatedly.
-
-
3
Tie one end of the twine to the loop at the end of the wire.
-
4
Bait the hook with the meat. The tough meat will force the turtle to bite down hard enough for the hook to set.
-
5
Drill a hole in the plywood slightly larger than the twine so that it can barely fit through the hole.
-
6
Pass the end of the twine with no hook through the hole in the plywood and tie a double knot to ensure the twine cannot slip through the hole.
-
7
Cast the plywood square into the center of the lake, with the hook and twine hanging down into the water.
