How to Decorate Outdoor Trees With Lights

Decorating your outdoor trees with lights for holidays such as Christmas or Halloween, or even for a party, can add ambiance to the festivities as well as provide a bit of extra light. Use small strings of lights to avoid overwhelming your yard with harsh, bright lights, which are unnatural and unflattering. Make a tentative plan before beginning so you know where your exterior electrical outlets are and which trees are close and big enough to get the most impact. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select the tree, or trees, you'd like to decorate. Run your extension cord from the electrical outlet to the tree to make sure it will reach and not get in the way of foot traffic. Set up your ladder beneath the tree as level as you can.

    • 2

Test your extension cord and light strings to make sure they are all in proper working order before stringing the tree.

    • 3

Lay out your strings of lights, whether they are fairy lights, Christmas lights or strings for any other holiday. Take one of your light strings by the side that ends with a light or female connector. Climb the ladder and start at the very top of the tree, winding it tightly around the trunk of the tree towards the ground. Continue in this fashion until you have wound the entire light sting around the tree, exposing only the male connector.

Pick up the next string of lights, plugging the male end of the first string of lights into the female connector of the new string. Begin winding the second string around the trunk and branches of the tree, winding around the branches away from the tree then back again. Complete this process until you have used all of your lights or added the amount of lights you were going for.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask for a trusted adult to help you string lights in your trees. Your helper can hold the ladder steady and hand you new strings of lights, as well as feed them to you, so you don't have to climb up and down the ladder.

  • Never leave the lights on when you aren't home as they can become a fire hazard. Do not overload your electrical outlets for the same reason.
