How to Make a Disk Image of Windows XP With Linux
Backing up your hard drive from time to time is a good thing, and making an image of your disk is a quick way to do so. Proprietary software, such as Norton Ghost, is available for a price---but why pay when there's free software capable of doing the job? Clonezilla is a Linux-based live CD which can completely clone your hard drive and copy the image in case you need it later.

1
Download Clonezilla. The download will come in form of an ISO file, a virtual CD.
-
2
Burn the ISO to CD. If you're not sure how to do this, check out ISO Recorder. After installing this program burning an ISO to disk is as easy as right-clicking the file in Windows Explorer, then clicking "Burn Image to Disc."

-
3
Boot from the CD. Restart your computer with the CD you just burned in the computer, making sure the computer boots from the CD. If this doesn't happen automatically, follow the instructions on screen immediately after powering on to enter the boot menu---frequently this is done by pressing "F12."
-
4
Tell Clonezilla to create an image from your disk: select "device-image" once Clonezilla boots.
-
5
Select where to create the image in the next step. You can use an external hard drive, a drive shared over the network or even a partition on your hard drive other than the one you're cloning.
