Stinkbugs are a common insect problem in North American homes. The bugs like to feed on garden vegetation and houseplants. They may also bite you. As winter approaches, the stink bugs begin searching for warmth and often invade a house. In some cases, stinkbug infestations can cover entire windows or walls. Get rid of of stinkbugs to protect your houseplants and yourself from the odor-emitting pests.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Permethrin-based pesticide spray
  • Silicone caulk
  • Cypermethrin solution
  • Bug spray
  1. Step 1

Spray down your houseplants and any shrubs or flower plants near your home with a permethrin-based insecticide. Plants are a common food source for stinkbugs and may draw their attention. Insecticides containing permethrin can be obtained from various manufacturers, including Durvet and Sawyer. Permethrin has a residual effect and will continue killing stinkbugs after the initial application. Repeat every four weeks.

  2. Step 2

Inspect your home for cracks and openings. Stinkbugs are guided by heat and can quickly detect small openings in your walls through which they can invade your home. Use silicone caulk to seal these openings. Potential problem areas include window frames and holes for external pipes or wiring.

  3. Step 3

Coat the outside of your home with cypermethrin. Cypermethrin solution can be obtained from many hardware stores and is a broad-spectrum pesticide that is effective against stinkbugs. Spray the top half of all external walls, allowing the solution to drip down and cover the rest of the wall's surface. For best results, spray at the end of summer or the start of fall before stinkbugs start searching for a hibernation spot.

  4. Step 4

Use standard bug spray to kill stinkbugs that actually get into your home. Stinkbugs will commonly be attracted to lights and appliances emitting heat. Observe where the stinkbugs are flying from, as they will often congregate in wall crevices and cracks. After spraying the free flying bugs, soak the crevice or crack with spray to kill any hiding stinkbugs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stinkbugs mark hibernation spots with a strong odor. This attracts stinkbugs the next year. It may take one to two yearly efforts to kill stinkbugs and stinkbug-proof your home before the bugs stop returning to your house.
