How to Disable an Automatic Toilet at Disney

Many restrooms at Disneyland and Disney World have automatic toilets. They have a motion sensor that flushes the toilet when a person gets up. Some young children, or those with disabilities such as autism or sensory integration disorder, do not like automatic toilets. They are startled or frightened by the sudden, unexpected flush. The Chicago Tribune says many also dislike the spray when the flush triggers too soon. Fortunately you can easily disable an automatic toilet at Disney.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the bathroom stall and locate the sensor on the toilet. Usually these are located behind the bowl, where you would reach to flush.

    • 2

Use a piece of paper and tape it over the sensor, covering it completely. You can also use a sticky note to blind the sensor. The Parents Magazine Goody blog says sticky notes are the most popular solution because they are so easy to use. Make sure the paper completely covers the sensor so it will be unable to detect any motion.

If you are helping a child, you can leave your child alone in the bathroom stall if they are old enough to use it themselves, or stay and assist if needed. If you leave the stall, remind the child not to move or touch the paper.

When you or the child is finished in the stall, remove the paper from the motion sensor. If this does not trigger the flushing mechanism, wave your hand in front of the sensor. If the toilet still does not flush, look for a manual flush button. All automatic toilets in Disney restrooms have a manual override that you can use if the automatic sensor does not work.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your child has special needs and requires more space or privacy when using the toilets at Disneyland or Disney World, use a companion restroom. These are usually marked on the park maps. They offer a large, private space that may be more comfortable and less intimidating for your youngster.
