How to Replace a Baluster

Things You'll Need
- Handsaw or reciprocating saw
- Wrench
- Putty knife
- Measuring tape
- Drill
- Wood screws or trim nails

Saw the broken baluster in half. Cut it in a nondecorative section so that you preserve the spindle design, which you can refer to when you look for a replacement. Pull the top half of the baluster from the railing; it should easily slide out.

Twist the bottom half of the baluster with a wrench to remove it. The baluster likely will be glued into a hole on the stair, and twisting will break the glue's grip.

Clean the baluster hole with a putty knife or spade to chip away any remaining wood.

Measure the distance between the stair and the railing. This will give you the size to cut the replacement baluster to.

Apply wood glue to both ends of the replacement baluster and put it into place.

Drill pilot holes through the back of the baluster near the top. Secure the baluster to the railing with wood screws or trim nails.

Stain or paint the baluster to match the rest of the staircase railings and balusters.
