Instructions

    • 1

Saw the broken baluster in half. Cut it in a nondecorative section so that you preserve the spindle design, which you can refer to when you look for a replacement. Pull the top half of the baluster from the railing; it should easily slide out.

    • 2

Twist the bottom half of the baluster with a wrench to remove it. The baluster likely will be glued into a hole on the stair, and twisting will break the glue's grip.

    • 3

Clean the baluster hole with a putty knife or spade to chip away any remaining wood.

    • 4

Measure the distance between the stair and the railing. This will give you the size to cut the replacement baluster to.

    • 5

Apply wood glue to both ends of the replacement baluster and put it into place.

    • 6

Drill pilot holes through the back of the baluster near the top. Secure the baluster to the railing with wood screws or trim nails.

    • 7

Stain or paint the baluster to match the rest of the staircase railings and balusters.
