How to Build an Electric Supercharger

The viability of the electric supercharger has long been in question, and even though some newer companies have seen excellent results with high-dollar turbo-based systems, many creative people continue to experiment with the concept on their own.
Unlike superchargers, these systems do not connect directly with the engine's crankshaft and are thus available on demand.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 Turbo 4000 Marine Blowers
  • 2 1.5-by-1/8-inch flat-head drive screws and matching nuts
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Wrench to match nut size
  • Four 1/8-inch washers
  • 15 feet 4-inch aluminum drier ducting
  • Wire cutters
  • Hacksaw blade
  • 4-inch drier duct hose clamps
  • 2-into-1 45-degree PVC pipe junction.
  • 3-feet red 16-gauge wire
  • 3-feet black 16-gauge wire
  • Complete electrical connector kit
  • 6 4-inch hose clamps
  • Wire strippers/crimpers
  • Electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Slip one washer each over 1.5-inch screws until it rests on the head.

    • 2

Holding the Marine Blowers together so that holes in the mounts line up, put screw through mounting holes and place washer on screw.

    • 3

Install nut on screw and hand tighten.

    • 4

Tighten nuts onto screws using flat head screwdriver and wrench. Do not over-tighten, or risk cracking the plastic mounts.

    • 5

Cut three 2-foot sections of drier ducting with hacksaw blade.

    • 6

Slip hose-clamp over the end of one of the tubing sections, and slip over outlet side of a blower motor.

    • 7

Tighten clamp to secure tube to blower motor.

    • 8

Repeat steps 6 and 7 on other blower motor.

    • 9

Slip hose clamp over end of drier ducting from one motor.

    • 10

Slip assembly onto one of the angled tubes on the 2-into-1 PVC connector. Tighten hose clamp with flat-head screwdriver.

    • 11

Repeat step 10 with other blower and tube.

    • 12

Repeat Step 10 with blower outlet tube.

    • 13

Wrap both tubes together from blower outlets to PVC connector with duct tape.

    • 14

Connect red wire from one blower motor to red wire on the other using a butt-type connector.

    • 15

Repeat Step 13 with black wires.

    • 16

Wrap butt connectors with electrical tape to insulate.

    • 17

Splice 3 feet of red wire into the red blower wires with crimp-type wire tap. Wrap connection with electrical tape.

    • 18

Repeat Step 16 with black wires.

    • 19

Route power wires to switching source of your choice, depending on the application requirements. Requires 8.4 amps current to operate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each Turbo 4000 pump can move 230 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air at 3 psi. Generally, you will want to run about 250 CFM of flow per liter of engine displacement.

  • Larger engines will require more flow, so you may need to build two systems like this for engines up to 3.6 liters in displacement.
