How to Attach Surround Speakers to a Wall

No home theater system is complete without surround sound. Surround sound will make your movies and music take on a whole new dimension. To fully experience surround sound, you must properly position and attach your surround speakers to the wall. If you mount speakers to the wall, you will be able tweak the angle of the speakers for the ideal listening experience. However, if the speakers are not attached correctly, you will experience a blurred surround sound image and a lack of clarity.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find your listening position. This will be the sweet spot of the room, so make it where you will sit most often when using the surround speakers. It will most likely be near the center of the room. Avoid asymmetrical placement of the listening environment, as it will skew the surround sound image.

  2. Step 2

Choose your speaker locations. For a 5.1 surround system, your center speaker will be above or below your television. The left and right speakers need to be equidistant from the television, but can be narrowly or widely spaced depending on the size of your room and the location of the listening position. The rear speakers should be on the side walls behind the listening environment or possibly on the rear wall facing toward the front.

  3. Step 3

Consider the height of your speakers. The ideal height is at ear level when you are in your listening position. Attaching the speakers to the wall too low or too high will affect the quality of the sound. If you must place speakers higher than ear level, angle them downward slightly.

  4. Step 4

Run your wires. Before you attach your speakers to the wall, make sure that you can wire them once they are mounted. It is ideal to run the wire under the floor or through the walls, though this may not be possible. If you must run the wire along wall, run it along the joint between the ceiling and the wall or the floor and the wall.

  5. Step 5

Mount your speaker brackets. Most surround speakers come with brackets that you can attach directly to the wall. If your speakers did not come with brackets, you can buy universal brackets that may work with your surround speakers. Try to mount your brackets directly into a stud. If mounting to a stud is not possible, mount the speaker brackets using drywall anchors. Be sure the brackets can support the weight of your surround speakers.

  6. Step 6

Attach your surround speakers to the brackets. Be sure that the speakers are securely attached to the bracket and that the bracket is capable of holding the speakers. Gradually put more weight on the brackets and if they start to pull away from the wall, immediately remove the speaker to prevent it from falling.

  7. Step 7

Position your speakers. Check your speaker's manual for the optimal angle. Some speakers function best pointed straight while others work better pointed at the listening point.
