How to Install Towing Mirrors on a 2007 GMC Sierra

Towing mirrors are extended mirrors used to provide additional rear visibility when towing. You can install a set of towing mirrors for your GMC Sierra that will replace your existing side mirrors and retain all factory features.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Socket wrench (10 mm)
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat head)
  • GMC towing mirror set or equivalent

Instructions

    • 1

Unhook the negative battery cable before beginning. This will ensure your safety and prevent electrical shock.

    • 2

Pry off the small panel right above the interior door handle. Remove the two bolts behind the panel.

    • 3

Pry off the trim panel on the vertical door pull, located at the front part of the armrest. The panel has a small notch on the bottom. Use this notch to pry off the panel. Remove the two bolts behind the panel.

    • 4

Remove the panel behind the interior door handle and remove the bolt behind it. Pulling the handle open will help you access the panel and the bolt.

    • 5

Pry off the panel surrounding the door lock tab at the top of the door panel. Slide the panel above the door lock tab to remove it.

    • 6

Grasp the sail panel (top corner of door panel) on both sides and pop it off. Grab both sides of the entire door panel and pull it to disengage the clips.

    • 7

Pull the panel a few inches away from the door and unhook the power window and door lock electrical connections. Set the entire door panel aside.

    • 8

Unhook the power mirror wiring harness (connected in the middle of the door). Secure the outside part of the side mirror with one hand and remove the three interior mirror mounting bolts with the other.

    • 9

Grab the outside part of the mirror and pull it away from the door to completely remove it from the truck.

    • 10

Insert the towing mirror into the mirror mounting spot. Hold the mirror with one hand and tighten the bolts with the other.

    • 11

Connect the towing mirror wiring harness to the same connection the previous mirror harness was connected to. If you skip this step, your power mirror feature will not work.

    • 12

Connect the negative battery cable and test the power mirror function while you still have the door panel off. Unhook the negative battery cable again to finish reinstalling the door panel.

    • 13

Place the panel against the door and connect the electrical harnesses for the power window and door locks. Push the door panel against the door to reattach the clips. Make sure every section of the door panel is attached.

    • 14

Replace the mounting bolts, and then replace the trim panels you removed to take the door panel off. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also install a towing mirror cover add-on. While this is not a true towing mirror, it will extend the mirror. These add-ons apply directly to your factory mirror and are much less expensive, although they are also less effective. To install a towing mirror cover add-on, simply snap the cover around the outside part of your side mirror.

  • Make sure your towing mirrors are specifically designed for your GMC Sierra (Chevy Silverado and Avalanche should be compatible). If not, the mirror may not install correctly and you may lose your power mirror feature.
