How to Use Sights on a Compound Bow

Using sights on a compound bow looks complicated, but in reality it's pretty easy. With practice, your arrows will be more accurate than shooting instinctively (without sights).

Instructions

    • 1

Practice, practice and practice some more. Start your practice by setting a target someplace with a good backstop. Make sure there's no chance of endangering a person or pet.

    • 2

Use a laser rangefinder to measure the distance from the target. Twenty yards is a good starting point for hunting practice.

    • 3

Start shooting. When you draw the bow and look through the peep sight, use the top pin to aim at the center of the target.

    • 4

Make any vertical adjustments. If the arrow hits high, move the pin up. If the shot is low, move the pin down. Continue shooting and adjusting until the arrow is hitting where it needs to in a vertical plane.

    • 5

Make horizontal adjustments. You'll move the pin right to compensate for an arrow that flies left and move it to the left for a shot that is right of the bull's-eye. Shoot and adjust until every shot is hitting the center of the target.

    • 6

If you'll be hunting from an elevated stand with your bow, make sure to practice from an elevated position. Your tree stand or garage roof work well for this purpose. Arrow trajectory is different when shooting from different angles. This practice will help you learn where the shot will hit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Enlist the help of an experienced archer the first time you try to set up sights on your bow.

  • A bow can be just as dangerous as a firearm. Use the same caution you would exercise with a gun.
