How to Make a Seed Sprouter at Home
Sprouts are a healthy and easy way to have a constant supply of homegrown vegetables available from your indoor garden. Sprouts were used in the 1700s as one of the ways to combat scurvy during long sea voyages, as they are high in vitamin C. There are also many plant seeds from which you can grow sprouts. Experiment with growing buckwheat, wheat grains, chickpeas, alfalfa seeds, mung beans, aduki beans, soya beans, sunflower, fenugreek, black-eyed peas or lentils.. You can grow your own sprouts indoors by constructing a simple seed sprouter.

1
Obtain plastic lids for your mason jars. You can purchase a pack of them at some canning stores or online. Refrain from using the metal lids that come with your canning jars. These will eventually rust from the amount of water you are soaking your sprouts with.
-
2
Use your hammer and nail to put several holes in the top of your plastic lid. Press as many holes as you can in the top of the lid. Press the nail all the way through each hole and pull it out to make the holes as wide as possible. The holes will be used to drain water from your jar.

3
Put about 1 inch of sprouting seeds in the bottom of your mason jar. Fill the jar completely full with water, and cover it with your lid.
-
4
Shake your jar so that all the seeds get coated with water and don't settle at the bottom of the jar right away. Set your sprouting jar in a sunny location overnight.
-
5
Drain the water the next day by turning your jar upside down over a sink. The water will drain through the holes you made.
-
6
Add just enough water to cover your seeds each day and shake the jar so the seeds stick to the sides of the jar and get plenty of light. Drain immediately through the lid, and set the jar back in a sunny location. Sprouts will appear within a few days.
