How to Play Steel-Tip Darts

Steel-tip darts are precision darts used to play on dartboards typically found in bars or other gaming settings. These darts are sharp, can be customized and are carefully crafted to fly with minimal deviation from the path on which they are launched. The rules for steel-tip darts are fairly simple. Care must be stressed due to the sharpness of the darts and the strength of the throw necessary for the dart to hit and stick in the board.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang your dartboard so the bull's-eye matches the height of an average man. This varies by area, but most professional dartboards are hung so the bull's-eye is 5 feet 8 inches above the floor.

    • 2

Create a throw line from masking tape by placing the tape on the floor 7 feet 9 ¼ inches away from the face of the board.

    • 3

To determine play order, take turns throwing one dart each into the board. Player turns will be based on which darts are closest to the bull's-eye.

    • 4

Have the first player throw three darts. Numbered squares gain the number of points indicated on the square. Bull's-eyes are worth 50 points, and the outer ring of the bull's-eye is worth 25. The double rings and triple rings multiply the number of points by two and three, respectively.

    • 5

Retrieve the three darts after each player has thrown. Take care when retrieving darts to keep everyone clear and ensure that no one is throwing while another person is past the throw line.

    • 6

Continue play until a player reaches an agreed-upon total. A short game may play to 100 points. Tournament-style games may play to 500 or 1,000 points. Players may re-fit their flights and shafts after each round.

Tips & Warnings

  • Steel-tip darts are often preferred over other materials due to their ability to stick further in the board and fly faster than plastic or composite materials. Many official rules discount throws that do not stick in the board for at least five seconds.

  • Take care when placing your board to ensure that bouncing darts will not hit objects or persons located nearby. Steel-tip darts can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
