Porcelain tile is a beautiful home accent, but it does require specialized cleaning in order to maintain and preserve it. If you are considering porcelain tile or own a home with this tile already in place, make sure that you are willing and able to put in the care necessary to keep this type of tile intact. By taking just a few extra minutes to customize your porcelain tile care, you can keep this flooring in good condition for years to come.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bristle broom
  • Soft bristle brush
  • 5 gallon bucket
  • Cleaning rags
  • Non-oil, non-animal fat, non-soap based porcelain cleaner
  1. Step 1

Sweep off the floor. Focus on making sure you target the areas of grout in between the tiles. Use the broom. Dust and dirt tend to get trapped in the grout areas that separate porcelain tile. Sweeping all of this buildup out of the way before you start scrubbing will prevent this grime from potentially damaging your tile or making the cleaning process harder.

  2. Step 2

Mix up your cleaning solutions. Most porcelain tile cleaners require that you dilute the solution. This will just involve adding a certain amount of water to a pre-measured amount of cleaner, but since the dilutions vary by manufacturer, you will need to be sure to follow the precise directions on the package. You can mix the cleaning solution in the five-gallon bucket.

  3. Step 3

Apply the cleaning solution using a cleaning rag to make sure that it covers every inch of the porcelain tile. Let it sit on the tile for about five minutes.

  4. Step 4

Scrub the tile using the soft-bristled scrub brush. Use gentle pressure and circular motions. Make sure that you focus especially on the grout in between the tiles.

  5. Step 5

Rinse the tile with clean, clear water. Use a cleaning rag that has been soaked with clean water. Use the same motions as you did when you were scrubbing to wash the tile down, and rinse out the rag often to make sure that you are not leaving soap scum on the tile.

  6. Step 6

Dry the tile with a dry, clean rag. Make sure that the tile and the grout are completely dry so that you do not end up with mold or mildew.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you notice grout coming up when you scrub, note the area. Once the tile is clean, you can seal the grout to prevent further damage using grout sealer.
