How to Set a Howard Miller Clock

Howard Miller is famous for its floor clocks---or grandfather clocks. A Howard Miller clock has five major mechanical elements. The movement controls the time keeping; the pendulum provides the way to adjust the timekeeping; weights provide the power; hammers and chime rods provide the signaling; and the clock face and hands indicate the time---and also provide the mechanism for setting the time.

Set the moon dial. Using the tips of your fingers rotate the moon dial clockwise until the moon icon is right below the number fifteen lunar day mark.

    • 2

Determine the date of the last full moon and count the number of days past the last full moon.

    • 3

Rotate the moon dial clockwise one lunar day for every day past the full moon.

    • 4

Set the time. Check the chime lever selection lever isn't in the "Auto" position and check the Day/Night lever is in the strike position.

    • 5

Move the minute hand counterclockwise until the hour and the minute hand are at the right time. Don't move the hour hand---it will move automatically.

    • 6

Start the clock. Open the door and grab the pendulum. Move the pendulum to the left, release it and the clock will start.

Tips & Warnings

  • It can take a couple of hours for the chime to become synchronized with the time.
