Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Sketch pad
  • Computer
  • Image-editing software
  • Desktop publishing software
  1. Step 1

Sketch your logo design. If you have a talent for drawing, sketch your newspaper logo by hand on a sketch pad. se desktop publishing software or image e-,diting software to create your logo if you plan to use a computer font as your logo font. Keep in mind you're doing a logo for a newspaper, and the focus should be on the name of the paper. Any image design elements should be minimal. "The New York Times" logo is a good example. The font is a calligraphic-type font that gives an old-world news feel to the logo while keeping it readable. If you are using computer fonts, look for something categorized as a headline font.

  2. Step 2

Scan your design into the computer and open it in a graphic-editing program. Or, edit it in the desktop publishing software you use to lay out your newspaper. Add shading to the logo to give it depth. Since the logo is for a newspaper, chances are good it will be reproduced in black and white on newsprint. If this is the case, don't add color to your logo, no matter how tempting it is. If the medium is black and white, design your logo in black and white. Thicken the lines of each letter so it stands out in high contrast to a newsprint background.

  3. Step 3

Avoid using a background with your logo. The name of your paper should be the primary design element. If you add an image element, try to incorporate an appropriate image into the text design itself. A fountain pen, for example, might be a simple graphic that fits the newspaper image without offsetting the balance of your logo or taking way from the name of the newspaper.
