Select a site to plant the grass. Blue oat grass prefers an area with at least six hours of sun, good drainage and moist soil. Consider where the blue oat grass would improve the look of the yard. Blue oat grass makes a great filler in gardens. It can be used to fill bare spots in a yard, such as between bushes. Blue oat grass also makes a great border plant for a lawn.

Prepare the area to be planted by loosening the soil with a rake. It is a good idea to fertilize the ground a week before planting but don't overdo it. Blue oat grass doesn't need a lot of fertilizer.

Dig a hole approximately twice the size of the starter plant's container. Blue oat grass starter plants come in clumps. Remove a clump gently from the pot and place it in the hole. Cover the plant's roots with dirt. Fill the remainder of the hole and pat down the soil. If planting more than one starter plant, dig the holes at least a foot or two apart. Blue oat grass spreads out and looks better if the clumps don't run into each other.

Moist soil is preferred, but blue oat grass will grow in sandy and heavy-clay soils as long as the area is not too wet in winter. The best time time to plant blue oat grass is in the spring. Do not plant blue oat grass when ground is frozen or may be frozen soon.
