Installing crown molding and trim is a great way to add value and beauty to your home. Traditionally, most trim has been made of wood. Flex Trim is made of composite materials that look like wood but are much easier to work with around curved walls and arches. Although it may seem difficult to install, Flex Trim is fairly easy to put in, and it can last longer than wood trim. You can stain it or paint it just like you would for wood trim.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flex Trim
  • Construction adhesive
  • Nail gun
  • Finishing nails
  • Wood putty
  • Putty knife
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper

    Installing Flex Trim

  1. Step 1

Measure the area you wish to cover with flexible trim. Flex Trim can be used on doorway arches, curved walls and other places where traditional wood trim might be too hard or too expensive to install. Make sure you buy enough, along with a little extra for touch-ups or in case of mistakes.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the surface that will receive the trim. Flexible trim will show any bumps or irregularities in the base surface. Sand down any bumps and fill in any holes or depressions in the base. A smooth and flat base layer will ensure a beautiful final result.

  3. Step 3

Measure, mark and cut each piece of trim for optimal fit. You can cut the trim with regular woodworking tools. Flex Trim is designed to be used the same way as wood trim. If you use a power saw, though, make your cuts quickly and precisely to keep the trim from overheating and melting.

  4. Step 4

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the trim in a wavy "S" pattern. Press the trim into place. Using small finishing nails, nail the trim in place. Avoid nailing within a half-inch of the edge to prevent splitting.

  5. Step 5

Fill nail holes with a small dollop of wood putty and a small putty knife. Once the putty dries, sand the surface to make it smooth and uniform.

  6. Step 6

Clean the surface of the trim to remove any dust or debris before painting or staining.

Tips & Warnings
  • Treat Flex Trim just as you would treat wood trim. Use the same tools and basic care for both types.
  • Always wear protective ear, including safety glasses, when using power tools.
