How to Install Rolled Rubber Roofing

Rooftops are constantly exposed to harsh elements, making them susceptible to leaks and weather damage. A more efficient alternative to standard roofing systems is EPDM (ethylene propylene diene Monomer) rubber. This durable protectant requires little to no maintenance and provides maximum insulation. It has minimal seams and no joints, facilitating the installation process as well. Installing EPDM rubber roofing can usually be achieved without professional assistance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface of the roof by cleaning it with a high grade roof cleaner, such as Jomax by Zinsser. You will need to rinse away any loose debris or residue before installing the rubber.

    • 2

Allow your roll of EPDM rubber to lay out for at least a half hour before cutting it. This will allow the sheet to flatten, making the rubber easier to work with.

    • 3

Cut sections of the rubber to size once you've measured the surface area of your roof. Determine how many individual sheets you want to manage, but keep in mind that the more sheets of rubber, the more seams there will be maintain later.

    • 4

Stir the provided adhesive for five minutes. Then fold back each sheet of rubber and evenly spread the adhesive. Don't apply too much near the edges or glue might seep through the seams later on.

    • 5

Use a large paintbrush to apply adhesive to the surface of the roof before permanently installing the rubber. Bond the rubber to the roof and use a paint roller to smooth out any bubbles; you can also use a push broom depending on the size of the roof.

    • 6

Wipe away any adhesive at the seams between each sheet of rubber with a clean towel. Then apply the seam tape that came with the roll to seal the rubber together. The rubber should dry for at least a half hour before any additional roofing can be installed.
