Home security used to be the domain of expensive security companies that charged installation and monthly monitoring fees. With the advances made in home surveillance technology and the increase in Internet speeds, anyone can now set up a home security system that you can monitor from anywhere in the world that has an Internet access. You can even set up your system to respond to movement so that you can be alerted to possible danger.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wireless surveillance camera with motion detection option
  • Wireless router hooked to the Internet
  • Computer with RJ45 network connection
  • RJ45 cable long enough to reach from the wireless router to the computer
  1. Step 1

Shut down your PC and your Internet modem.

  2. Step 2

Determine a good spot to install your camera in the area that you want to monitor. Wireless surveillance systems are sometimes rated for indoors or outdoors, so if you are installing your camera outdoors then be sure you have purchased one that is rated for that use. Once installed, turn the camera on.

  3. Step 3

Using the cable that came with the router, plug your wireless router into your Internet modem. Set the router within range of the wireless surveillance camera. In most cases you can set the router anywhere within 250 feet of the camera.

  4. Step 4

Connect the computer to the router using the RJ45 cable. Plug the computer into port 1 on the router. Every wireless router needs at least one computer hardwired into it for it to work.

  5. Step 5

Turn on your network components in this order: your Internet modem, then the wireless router and then the computer. The network should automatically recognize everything and set itself up. The router may require separate set-up using a CD and the manufacturer's instructions. If the router needs to be set up, then do the set-up following the instructions, shut the computer and then the router down and then turn them back on, router first. Your wireless network is now set up and functioning.

  6. Step 6

Install any software for the camera that came with it. This software will include the motion-sensing functionality along with any other special features offered by the camera.

  7. Step 7

Use the user's guide to determine what the IP address is for the camera. It will be in a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format. Type that address into the address box of your Internet browser and the camera's images will appear in the browser.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to monitor multiple rooms at the same time, then simply install more cameras. You can watch as many camera feeds as you can fit on one screen using multiple Internet browser windows.
  • Be sure to enact the security feature on the wireless router to protect your network from hackers.
