How to Repair Damaged Roof Shingles

Things You'll Need
- Flat pry bar
- Hammer
- 1 1/4-inch roofing nails
- Utility knife
- New shingles
- Roofing cement

Break the sealer strip. On each shingle there is a sealer strip. Use the pry bar on the shingles directly above the damaged shingle to gently break the sealer strip. When this has been done, you should be able to see the four nails of the damaged shingle.

Remove the nails on the damaged shingle. Carefully slip the flat pry bar under the damaged shingle and pull it up. Once the nails are lifted enough to remove them, push the shingle back down and pull out the nails.

Remove the nails on the shingles right above the damaged shingle. Each shingle is attached with four nails. However, the nails that attach an above shingle also help to attach a lower shingle. Because of this, it is important to use the flat pry bar carefully to remove the nails on the shingles directly above the damaged shingle. Be careful not to damage the shingles above the one you are replacing.

Slide the damaged shingle out of its place on the roof. Attach a new shingle with nails in the same spot, in the same pattern as the nails you removed. Cover all the nails with roofing cement to seal the roof from moisture.
