How to Choose a Modern Style Bed

A modern style bed is sleek, new and contemporary. The bed can be made from several types of materials including metal, iron, wood or plastic. Modern beds differ from traditional or antique style beds because they lack the ornate carvings often seen in traditional wooden furniture. Many modern style beds are platform beds, which mean they sit several inches closer to the floor than a traditional bed, and they don't require a box spring.

Why Choose a Modern Style Bed

  1. Step 1

Since the bed is the main decorative attraction in the room, choosing a bed for a bedroom is a very important décor element.

  2. Step 2

Modern style beds are a perfect choice for many bedrooms because they don't take up a huge amount of space vertically, and they are often cost-effective.

  3. Step 3

Modern beds can and often do still have a large headboard. Since the beds usually sit lower to the floor, they can make a small room appear larger.

  4. Coordinating With a Modern Bed

  5. Step 1

A modern style bed doesn't necessarily mean that all other furniture in the room has to be modern. This type of bed can coordinate with transition furniture and Asian style furniture as well. As long as the other furniture in the room is sleek with clean lines, it will coordinate well.

  6. Step 2

Choosing a modern style bed does not limit your options for bedding. A sleek tucked-in look works best because it displays the platform style of the bed.

  7. Step 3

The only types of bedding that are probably best avoided are covers made highly of lace, antique quilts, and anything that can't be tucked in.

  8. Choosing a Modern Bed

  9. Step 1

Most furniture stores will have a modern style bed option, but some stores specialize in modern décor. To have a wide range of options, stores such as Ikea, West Elm and CB2 are worth checking out.

  10. Step 2

When trying to choose a specific bed, first recognize what other furniture will be in the room. If you have a wooden dresser or nightstand, a wooden or metal bed will most likely match best. If you only have a small white nightstand, a plastic, metal or iron bed will be best. If you're starting from scratch and getting an entirely new bedroom set, the possibilities are wide.

  11. Step 3

Decide where in the room to place the bed. If it's directly in front of a window, a tall and large headboard is not an option. A platform bed without a headboard is ideal because the window treatments can be the focal point behind the bed. If the bed will be placed along a wall and you don't have many wall hangings so that you're looking to take up wall space, a large and tall headboard could be perfect.
