How to Write a Book Layout

Writing a book is one of the most difficult things a person can do. It takes time, discipline, patience and knowledge. One important task a prospective author must undergo is creating a layout. The book layout is essentially the structure of the book, consisting of items such as the foreword, table of contents, introduction and the body of the text.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Download the PDF file provided in References, and print the file.

    • 2

Starting from the beginning, fill out the sections of the book layout. Instructions for filling out each form are provided on the sheet itself.

    • 3

Attach all of the necessary sections to a three-ring binder.

    • 4

When you have finished writing the book, organize it in the binder and submit it to the publisher. Alternatively, if you are self-publishing, you can take the binder and its contents to a printer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're self-publishing, you can choose which parts of the layout to include or not include. Be sure to also consider what kind of font to use in your book. Sometimes a publisher will state the font to use, and other times they will leave it up to you. Use a font that's clear and readable. Don't put the entire book inside the binder if you haven't finished it. You may, however, consider using the layout to set up the chapters of your book. For the copyright section, you might want to look at another book, or consult an attorney or publishing expert.

  • Publishers may have their own layout guide for books. If yours does, you should follow it instead of the layout supplied in this article. (You should still be able to follow the steps, however.)
