How to Judge a Good Mattress

Most people expect their mattress to last more than seven years, that is over 2,500 nights of good or bad sleep based on one single purchase. Having a good day largely depends on having a good night's sleep, and since most people spend about one-third of their lives in bed, choosing the right mattress is directly related to having a good day. While shopping for a new mattress can be a daunting task, it is an opportunity to greatly improve your quality of life. Does this Spark an idea?

Start shopping when you are well rested and are wearing comfortable clothes with easily removable shoes. Mattress shopping is a physical task that involves getting up and down from a bed many times throughout the process. To aid in decision making, bring your bed pillow. This will give you a better idea of how a bed will ultimately feel.

In a room full of 50 mattresses, it's difficult to know where to start. Ask the sales person to show you a mattress in the mid-range of soft and firm. After determining whether this bed is too firm or too soft, you should be able to narrow your options.

When testing mattresses, try to relax in a position you would normally sleep in, and don't forget to use your own pillow. Close your eyes, and listen to what your body is saying. Are there parts of the mattress that feel too hard? Too soft? Pay close attention to any pressure points that may become uncomfortable. It may take around 10 minutes to determine if there are such pressure points, so be patient and take your time with each mattress.

To determine whether a mattress provides enough back support, lie on your back and slide your hand under the small of your back. If it is easy to slide your hand between your back and the mattress, it is probably too firm, but if there is no space between your back and the bed, it is probably too soft.

If you will share the bed with a partner, it is important that you both test the bed at the same time. Get in and out of the bed to see how much movement you feel when your partner is moving. Because this will ultimately affect your sleep, find a bed that does not transfer much movement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stores that specialize in mattress sales will have a far greater selection than department stores.

  • If you are unsure about the firmness of a mattress, remember that it is easy to add some softness using a mattress pad.

  • It can be tempting to save money by not purchasing a new foundation for your mattress, but these, just like mattresses, experience wear over the years and need to be replaced.
