Determine Your Riding Stance, Regular or Goofy Footed

So you want to start snowboarding, wakeboarding, surfing, or skateboarding but don't know which direction you want to ride, regular or goofy. Follow these simple steps to determine which foot forward will be most natural for you. This will ensure you learn as quickly and easily as possible.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, let me define regular and goofy footed. Regular footed is riding with your left foot forward and goofy is the opposite, right foot forward. However, statistically there are almost just as many goofy footed people as regular.

  2. Step 2

First, find a friend and ask him or her to do you a quick favor. Next, stand with both feet together about shoulder width apart facing your friend.

  3. Step 3

Finally, ask your friend to give you a firm push. When they push you, your reflexes will kick in and you will step back with one foot to keep yourself from falling. Whichever foot you step backward with is the foot you will want on the back of the board while riding. If you step back with your left foot, then you are goofy footed. If you step back with your right foot, you guessed it, you're regulard footed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to think about your feet when being pushed. This could potentially influence which foot you step back with.
