An above ground pool is a pool situated above ground that can be removed when the season has ended and the weather turned colder. Above ground pools are a less expensive alternative to in-ground pools. A few low-cost items will keep your above ground pool free from debris, ensuring the water inside remains clear and attractive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the pool is situated in the ideal place. The easiest way to make sure that an above ground pool remains clean is to make sure the pool has been placed in the best spot in the yard. An above ground pool should be placed far away from any greenery if possible. Keep the pool from trees and shrubbery. Clip branches that extend near the pool waters.

  2. Step 2

Cut back all shrubbery with leaves that might fall into the pool's waters. If necessary, speak to neighbors about maintaining their landscaping to avoid it touching any area of the pool.

  3. Step 3

Use a skimmer. A skimmer is a small net that can be dragged around the side of the pool. Many above ground pools come with such nets as part of the purchase price. If you don't have one, you can easily purchase one for under $50. Use the net to clean the pool by holding it in your hand as you walk around the outside of the pool. The net should reach all the way into the water to catch all debris.

  4. Step 4

Bring the net inside the pool. You can also climb inside the pool and bring the net with you. Use it to catch small items that can easily fall to the bottom of the pool, such as rocks and acorns.

  5. Step 5

Use a vacuum. Vacuums pull out debris by suction power. Many above ground pool come with a vacuum attachment. The attachment is placed on the motor and the debris is sucked out into a pouch that can be emptied manually. A small above ground pool needs only a small vacuuming once or twice a week to remain clean. Use the vacuum attachment for about half an hour or so once you start to see debris accumulate.

  6. Step 6

Keep the pool covered. Help reduce the amount of debris falling inside of the pool by covering it when not in use. A good pool can be purchased for under $50. Using the pool cover can keep animals and birds out of the pool as well.
