  1. Step 1

While cleaning and sorting your closet, remember to choose the heaviest fabrics to consign during the winter months. In consignment, a winter season could begin as early as September and run as late as February. Make sure to call around, or check online to see how your local shop accepts items and don't forget to ask about the length of consignment cycle, split of the consignment, and what the shop expects out of incoming consignment items. Some shops require appointments, while other accept on a drop-off basis.

Winter items you could consign should be less than 3 years old, darker in color and heavier fabrics. Fabrics such as heavy cottons, polyesters, flannels, and worsted or boiled wools are perfect for this season. Keep in mind that people often layer up during the winter seasons, so you could include lighter weight, long sleeved tees or thermal tops as well.

  3. Step 3
Every woman has something like this to get rid of!

Some consignment shops will accept seasonal clothing. Items that have to do with the holidays are generally a big hit in consignment shops. If you have Thanksgiving or Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa related clothing, see if your local shop would be interested. They may only accept these items during specific weeks of the year.

  4. Step 4
Warm accessories are always in demand!

Warm accessories are always in demand!

With winter comes lots of accessories! Coats, scarves, hats, gloves, and boots are always in need and sought out and in my own personal experience in my shop sells FABULOUSLY! Make sure with coats that all linings and hoods are intact and free of any rips, tears, or underarm staining. All buttons or zippers should be in working order. With accessories such as hats, scarves, and boots, choose only the best-condition items. Leather gloves are popular, but don't consign gloves with lots of wear and tear on them. Items that look and present the best will always sell the fastest and for the most money.
Boots should be cleaned or polished and free of dirt or mud in the treads.

  5. Step 5

Always wash or dry clean items you want to consign. Presentation is IMPORTANT! If its something you normally hang in your closet, present it on a hanger. Folded items such as pants, jean, knit tops, or sweaters present nicely folded in a laundry basket, storage tote, or handled shopping bag. By following my tips you will have better luck selling your winter items on consignment. Make sure to check out my other articles for more consignment advice!
