Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Persistence
  1. Step 1

Link to other sites. Trying to get backlinks to your site can seem like a difficult and confusing process, but if you follow a few simple steps you can achieve more than you ever thought possible. A backlink is a link on that another site puts on their pages linking back to your site. In addition to sending visitors your way, backlinks can also boost your search engine rankings considerably. Before you ask anyone in your industry to link to your site, show them that you are serious and willing to reward them for their efforts by already having a link to their site on one or more of your pages.

  2. Step 2

Determine the exact HTML that you would like other sites to use when linking to you. Search engines look at the link text to determine what your site is about, so this is very important. Make sure that keywords that are important to you are displayed prominently in the links that you create. You will use this HTML code when you ask other sites to link to you, saving them time, ensuring that the link will boost your search engine ranking, and making them more likely to display the link.

  3. Step 3

Get in contact with complementary sites. Find sites that deal with some of the same issues as your site, but that are not in direct competition with your site. Send them a message, asking them to link to your site. Provide them with the exact HTML that you would like them to put on their pages (See Step 2). Be sure to let them know that you have already posted a link to their site on your own site.

  4. Step 4

Continue to reward sites that link to you. It is important not to take down the links to other sites that you put up once those sites have linked to you. Other site owners will only continue to link to you when they view it as a mutually beneficial relationship. However, it can often be confining to maintain all these links to other site. A good solution to this is to use the Top Incoming Links Widget from See. Link. Run. (http://seelinkrun.com/widgets/TopIncomingLinks.html) This widget tracks and displays your top incoming links, saving you the trouble and making sure you never lose the support of those sites that send you your most visitors.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be persistent. It may take awhile to see the benefits of your hard work, but over time the number of links to your site will gradually build
