Step 1
Choose a darker color as opposed to a light one when getting plus size clothing. Darker colors are much more forgiving than a pink or white or yellow dress. When purchasing a plus size dress, try to find dresses that are black, brown, grey, or navy blue. Stay away from pastels, and go for womens clothing that is highly saturated in color (deep).

Step 2
When considering clothes for plus size women, you should consider dresses that are knee-length as opposed to too short, which won’t look right. A long dress covers the legs, which is the last thing you want to do. Showing off at least ½ your legs will make you look taller and thinner.

Step 3
As far as material goes, you should go for fabrics that have some weight to them like a cotton blend as opposed to fabrics that are flimsy or flowing. Let the clothes do some of the work in making you look good. Flimsy fabrics generally drape too much and cling in all the wrong places.

Step 4
Cut is probably the most important thing when you pick plus size dresses. If you can afford it, you should consider plus size designer clothing. This is because designer plus size garments will be cut properly to give you the most flattering look. However, if you don’t want to go the designer route, look for dresses with embellishments up by the neck such as crystals, rhinestones, or embroidery to bring the eye up toward your face.

Step 5
Cross-over dresses look nice in plus sizes, also. Look for women’s plus size clothing that has some structure to it – does the dress look shapely on the hanger? If so, try that dress on. Another option is a dress with a matching coat that goes with it. Wear a thick belt around the waist and then wear the matching plus size jacket open. This will reveal a waist, but allow you to cover up some areas as well so you won’t feel too exposed.
