When a loved one has cancer, what do you do? Mesothelioma presents an extra mental tribulation because it's man-made. Loved ones with mesothelioma and their families often feel like victims. To cope with mesothelioma, surround the patient with love and affection because chemotherapy success rates are low.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Listen to their thoughts and fears without thinking of yourself. Mesothelioma is cancer from asbestos, which means that they were exposed to a toxin which is now killing them. That's hard to deal with, mentally.

  2. Step 2

Reassure them that you're not "brought down" by hearing their thoughts. Just love every moment with them and learn as much as you can from their experience. Share your thoughts and feelings about mesothelioma, too.

  3. Step 3

Offer to drive them to medical appointments, or help explore alternative therapies or treatments for mesothelioma. Unfortunately, the odds of surviving, even with chemotherapy, are slim.

  4. Step 4

Tease them about medical marijuana. In many states, it's legal for cancer patients and is reputed to be able to restore an apatite that's suffering from chemotherapy drugs. With mesothelioma, though, smoking anything is a really bad idea. Medical marijuana advocates recommend a vaporizer or THC infused food products for most medicinal purposes.

  5. Step 5

Attempt to beat the bucket list. Make a list of things to do together and spend all of your spare time doing them.

  6. Step 6

Take portraits while your loved one is feeling good. These will be a treasured memory one day. Even Cancer survivors will look back at their "before-cancer" photos affectionately.

  7. Step 7

Get legal documents in order for the transfer of property or other assets.

  8. Step 8

Consult an attorney who specializes in mesothelioma lawsuits to discern whether or not the asbestos exposure was part of a class-action lawsuit. Many companies underestimated the amount of damage asbestos could cause and didn't heed the warnings of their own researchers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Religious perspectives can add to the suffering of some people or reduce the suffering of others. If you disagree with your loved one's religious preferences, now is not the time to argue with them.
