How to Make 5 Meals to Make For Under $5

With the economy causing so many of us to lose our jobs, many of us are looking for recipes to feed our families less expensively. There are a lot of recipes that your whole family will love that can be made cheaply, but the problem is finding them. Here are a few recipes that are very inexpensive, but are still healthy for your family to eat.

Things You'll Need:

  • Ingredients are listed with each recipe.
  1. Step 1

    Make chicken and noodles.

    INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
    can chicken
    egg noodles
    celery (diced)
    carrots (diced)
    chicken broth
    4 tablespoons magarine

    DIRECTIONS:
    1. Put broth, margarine, celery, carrots and chicken into a pot.
    2. Bring to a boil.
    3. Add noodles, and cook until noodles are tender.
    4. Serve hot.

  2. Step 2

    Make chicken and rice.

    INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
    can chicken
    3 cups rice
    4 cups water
    1 16 ounce chicken broth
    celery (diced)

    DIRECTIONS:
    1. Put all ingredients into a large baking dish, and stir together.
    2. Cover with aluminum foil or a lid.
    3. Cook for about 30 minutes or until rice is dry and tender.
    4. Serve hot.

  3. Step 3

    Make chicken pot pie.

    INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
    can chicken
    one diced onion
    one small bag frozen peas and carrots
    one potato
    flour
    ½ cup shortening
    water
    1 can chicken broth

    DIRECTIONS:
    1. Pour one cup flour into a bowl, and cut the shortening into it.
    2. Add enough water to create a soft dough.
    3. Roll out the dough into a flat sheet, and place into a pie pan.
    4. Put chicken, onion, peas and carrots, and potato into a pot, and bring to a boil.
    5. Mix two tablespoons of flour into a half cup of water.
    6. Add flour mixture to pot, and mix to create a thin gravy.
    7. Pour into the pie shell.
    8. Roll out a top shell, and bake in a 350 degree oven until lightly brown.
    9. Serve hot.

  4. Step 4

    Make chicken tacos.

    INGREDIENTS:
    can chicken
    1 teaspoon chili powder
    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon pepper
    ½ to 1 teaspoon ground red peppers
    lettuce
    tomato
    cheese
    flour tortillas

    Directions:
    1. Saute chicken in a pan with spices until hot.
    2. Stuff tortilla with chicken, shredded lettuce, diced tomato and cheese.
    3. Serve hot. You can top it with taco sauce or salsa.

  5. Step 5

    Make chicken salad sandwiches.

    INGREDIENTS:
    can chicken
    1 stalk celery (diced)
    1 boiled egg (diced)
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon pepper
    ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    ½ teaspoon onion powder
    ½ cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
    bread

    Directions:
    1. Mix all ingredients except bread in a large bowl.
    2. Put a scoop of chicken salad on bread, spread, and top with second slice of bread.
    3. Serve immediately or refrigerate.

    Tip: You can serve the chicken salad over a bed of lettuce and tomato for a different meal.

Tips & Warnings
  • These are a few economical meals to make out of chicken. Get creative, and add other vegetables and sauces to the meals to make them stretch even further.
