Spider plants make beautiful houseplants and are some of the easiest plants to grow from cuttings.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spider plant clipping
  • Water
  • Root hormone (optional)
  • Pot
  • Soil
  1. Step 1

If you know a friend or family member that already owns a spider plant, then you're already on your way to growing your own! Contact this person and ask them if their plant has any clippings, or "spider babies," that are ready to be cut off and replanted. Make sure to pick a clipping that already seems to have its own root system started. These roots will be visible to the human eye.

  2. Step 2

Using scissors, or just by detaching the plant gently by hand, separate the mini spider plant from the mother spider plant.

  3. Step 3

Immediately transfer to a small cup containing regular tap water. The plant will remain here until it has developed a substantial amount of developed roots.

  4. Step 4

Fill a relatively small pot with soil, and then place the plant so that its root are planted in the soil and the actual plant is seated on top. The smaller the pot you use, the quicker your plant is likely to give off shoots and clippings, as these plants like to be pot-bound.

  5. Step 5

Water once every few days or when the soil seems dry. If the plant doesn't seem to be taking, wait a while, especially if you are in colder temperatures. Spider plants can go into a hibernating growth period where they will survive but not put out new leaves until the temperature rises.
