How to Make Orange Oatmeal Christmas Cookies

Christmas cookies should always be unique and special. Most people love citrus flavored dessert cookies, so these Orange Oatmeal Christmas Cookies will also make wonderful gifts, or cookies to take to parties during the holiday season. These delicious orange oatmeal cookies fit the Christmas cookie bill beautifully.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • Grated rind of one organic orange
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 1/2 cup quick-cooking oat
  • Flour sifter
  • Spatula
  • Cookie sheets, two or more
  1. Step 1

    Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Grease two cookie sheets.

  2. Step 2

    Measure flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg into a flour sifter; sift into a medium sized bowl.

  3. Step 3

    Add shortening, unbeaten egg, and orange rind and juice to the flour mixture; beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is smooth and well-blended.

  4. Step 4

    Blend in the quick-cooking oats. The dough will be very thick.

  5. Step 5

    Drop the cookie dough by teaspoonfuls about three inches apart onto the greased cookie sheets.

  6. Step 6

    Bake your Orange Oatmeal Christmas cookies in the 375 degree oven for about twelve to fifteen minutes, or until the cookies edges are lightly browned.

  7. Step 7

    Run a spatula under the cookies; remove cookies to wire cake racks; cool. Store Orange Oatmeal Christmas cookies in an airtight container to keep the cookies crisp.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make lots of cookies; these cookies are delicious and go fast.
  • Make a plate of Orange Oatmeal Christmas cookies for your child's teacher, or for the mail man or woman. They'll love you for it.
  • If you have your children helping you bake cookies, make sure they avoid burning themselves on the oven. Place cookies in the oven, and remove them when done yourself to be on the safe side.

on 10/28/2009 My mother used to make orange cookies at Christmas which I recall because of the orange rind. Could this be the same recipe? I'm adding this to my favorites because I will be making some and this is close enough!
