Learn how to change your computer desktop wallpaper on the Windows XP operating system.

  1. Step 1

    The easy way to change the Wallpaper Settings on your desktop is to go directly to your desktop and right click and choose Properties.

  2. Step 2

    Click the tab that says Desktop. You can choose a pre-installed background if you like how they look and select apply.

  3. Step 3

    Choose Browse if you want to use your own image.

  4. Step 4

    Select the image you want to use. Choose the position you want the pictured displayed as. You can center, tile or stretch an image. Most users would choose stretch so that the full image is on the entire screen. You can play with this feature to get the best position for your new computer desktop background. Select apply for the image to take affect.

  5. Step 5

    Search online if you are interested in a particular desktop wallpaper. When you find an image you like, save the image to your computer so that you will always have the image. You can then change your wallpaper by selecting that image. You can also follow the instructions that the site gives for using their images as your computer wallpaper.

  6. Step 6

    Check the resources section for a list of some sites that offer free computer backgrounds.

  • Be sure you scan images for viruses if you are going to download them to your computer.
