How to Use Model Mayhem for Networking

Save

Model Mayhem is a popular networking site for models, photographers, makeup artists, hair stylists, Photoshop enthusiasts, and others involved in the photo industry. The owners of Model Mayhem bill it as the website "Where Professional Models Meet Model Photographers." Members of Model Mayhem may share their portfolios, participate in forums and arrange to work together.

Things You'll Need

  • Model Mayhem account
  • Create a profile and post your portfolio, then keep your presentation and information as appealing, professional, and up-to-date as possible. If you've gained or lost weight, say so. Misrepresenting your stats may be problematic, especially if yo show up for a scheduled shoot looking different from your online presence. Ensure that your profile clearly conveys important information that will be of interest to potential collaborators, such as what type of work you do, what type of collaboration you're seeking and other useful details.

  • Work the forums — "Newbie Forum," "Model Colloquy" and "Photography Talk," just to name a few. The forums receive a lot of attention and offer you a way to get your name and looks in front of a lot of people at once. Present yourself professionally at all times (forum drama is rampant and it quickly undermines the professionalism of those who engage in it), and keep the forum rules in mind as you post.

  • Get in touch with your neighbors. Use the "Browse" function to search for Model Mayhem members in your area. View their profiles, post on their walls, or send a private message.

  • Post a casting. If you're looking for Model Mayhem members for a specific project, or will be traveling out of town and wish to collaborate with others while in another location, try the "Casting/Travel" section. You may post casting calls or travel notices that will be seen by any photographers, models, makeup artists, etc. who search the database.

  • Click on "Model Mayhem Announcements" on the front page and you will be taken to a screen where you may type a short message to be displayed on the front page. Then, when others view the front page of Model Mayhem, your avatar, name, and message will be displayed, potentially prompting them to visit your profile. Keep in mind that this function is busy and popular, and your message will not be displayed for more than a few seconds. Still, it affords you the opportunity to get your name and message in front of a large audience.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're just starting out and are trying to build up a portfolio, TFP (Trade for Print) can be a good way to get some initial pics, as well as valuable experience and networking!
