How to Make Beaded-Crochet Flip-Flops

You can add a little pizazz to your flip-flops by crocheting with beads around the bands that hold the sandals on your feet. A colorful novelty yarn with pretty fly-aways or ribbon mixed in will also add a dash of color to complement the beads. Plastic beads will work best for beaded-crochet flip-flops, not only because they come with holes big enough to thread yarn through, but because they can sustain the abuse a pair of flip-flops takes during wear.

Things You'll Need

  • Colorful novelty yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Large-hole plastic or acrylic beads, or pony beads, in different colors
  • Crochet hook size K
  • Craft foam or rubber flip-flops
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

String the beads on the yarn in any order you like. A yarn needle on the end of the yarn will make this task easier.

    • 2

Make a slipknot at the end of the yarn, and place the knot on your crochet hook to begin crocheting.

    • 3

Hold the yarn over the top of the flip-flop band, starting at the right-hand edge. Slide the crochet hook under the band and catch the yarn in the hook to pull up a loop, towards yourself, in front of the band.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn around the hook once for a yarn over, and pull the yarn through both loops on the hook to complete a single crochet stitch around the flip-flop band.

    • 5

Repeat step 3 to begin a new stitch to the left of the previous one, but this time push a bead on the yarn up against the hook after you catch the yarn to pull up a loop.

    • 6

Hold the the bead against the hook as you repeat step 4 to complete the single crochet stitch.

    • 7

Repeat steps 3 through 6 randomly across the flip-flop band until it is covered with single crochet stitches and beads. You do not need to add a bead to every stitch, but you can if you like.

    • 8

Fasten off when you reach the end of the band on the left side of the flip-flop. Repeat all steps for the second flip-flop.

Tips & Warnings

  • A novelty yarn such as Fun Fur or a confetti yarn will add additional color and texture to your beaded-crochet flip-flop design.
