Sketch out your ideas for your racing T-shirt on paper. Include logos, symbols or other identifying information your T-shirts need to have, such as each team member's name and car number. Once you've settled on your design premise, it's time to create the design that will go on a T-shirt in a graphics program.

Decide on the size of the image you want for your T-shirt. Basically, you should consider what type of printing method you will be using to determine the maximum size image you should create. A heat press will have a maximum size, depending on the size heat press being used, as will the ink jet printer you use to print the design on the transfer paper

Open a new document in a graphics program like Photoshop. In the dialog that opens, set the pixel "height" and "width" boxes. Next, set your desired resolution; generally, you should go with at least 200 pixels for a quality print job. For printing a T-shirt, choose a transparent background layer.

Create your image by using layers to add each new element to your design. Let's say you want to add the number 49 to your image, this should go on one layer. Another layer might have the image of a racing car, another the name of the driver and so on. This allows you to add effects and any other changes to each element within your design without altering the work you've done on other elements on separate layers. Filters can be used to show motion, such as the "motion blur filter," or to add a variety of other effects that can make your racing team T-shirt look like it was designed by a professional graphics artist.

Save your final design as a PNG file and either place it on a CD or upload it directly to an online printing company, like CafePress (unless you plan to print it yourself). Later, you can always make changes to your design, such as adding a new team members name or car number as long as you maintain your original design.

Tips & Warnings
Many online printing services have preset size requirements so it's a good idea to check before you begin creating your T-shirt's design if you plan to have someone else print the shirt. The same advice is true if you are going through a local screen printer or T-shirt print shop.
