Monkey grass is an Asian grass that resists heat and drought while providing attractive ground cover and edging in your garden beds. With its small, white flowers and spiked leaves, this hearty plant tends to fill open areas quickly, so it must be monitored to avoid overgrowth. This particular plant's resilience makes it easy to grow in just about any climate or region.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden gloves
  • Hand shovel
  • Fertilizer
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Map out the areas of your lawn and garden you would like to edge with monkey grass.

  2. Step 2

Use a hand shovel to dig six inches into the ground in plots approximately six inches apart.

  3. Step 3

Stagger the plants in a zigzag pattern, leaving room for the grass to fill into open spaces over time.

  4. Step 4

Work liquid fertilizer into the soil. Be sure you're wearing your garden gloves to avoid getting fertilizer on your skin.

  5. Step 5

Pack dirt firmly in and around your plots of monkey grass.

  6. Step 6

Water your freshly planted monkey grass lightly. Since these plants stand up well in the face of drought and humidity, don't over water them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Monitor the growth, and weed out any monkey grass that staggers away from your designated path to keep your garden neat. You can also cut away growth for fuller, more resilient plants.
  • Because monkey grass tends to fill in, you don't want to plant the plots too close together, otherwise you'll wind up with more growth than you bargained for.
