Things You'll Need:
- Handgun
- Scope mount
- Green Sharpie marker
- C-clamp (if necessary)
- Cordless drill (if necessary)
- 1/8-inch twist bit (if necessary)
- 1/4-inch screws (if necessary)
- Screwdriver (if necessary)
- Vice
- Handgun scope
-
Step 1
Break down your handgun until the only part you are left with is the empty barrel. Make sure the magazine or any bullets have been removed.
-
Step 2
Fit the scope mount over the gun barrel. The scope mount contains a mounting rail to which the handgun scope will be secured. If the scope mount is a snap-on, secure it and skip to Step 5. If the scope mount must be secured with screws, center the scope mount on the barrel and mark the screw holes with a green Sharpie marker or any color that will stand out against your gun's color. Remove the scope mount.
-
Step 3
Use a C-clamp to hold the gun barrel tight against a flat surface, such as a workbench. Use your cordless drill and 1/8-inch twist bit to drill holes through the barrel at the appropriate markings.
-
Step 4
Reposition the scope mount over the gun barrel and secure it with screws. The appropriate screw size should be contained in the scope mount kit. If not, use 1/4-inch screws.
-
Step 5
Place the scope mount, now attached to the gun barrel, into a vice. Tighten the vice enough so that it has the scope mount in a snug hold, but don't tighten too much as this can bend the metal of both the scope mount and the barrel itself, making the gun impossible to reassemble. You only need the scope mount to be held in place so that both hands are free to install the scope.
-
Step 6
Slide the scope onto the mounting rail on the scope mount. Rotate the scope so that the scope's elevation adjustment dial sits on top of the scope. After the scope has been locked into place, release the barrel from the vice and reassemble the entire gun.
-
Step 7
Test your scope in a firing position. Make sure there are no bullets inside the gun and point the gun away from people. Familiarize yourself with the view from the scope. Load some bullets into your handgun and fire at a target in a secluded area. Focus on looking at your target through the scope instead of over your handgun. If you notice that your handgun is shooting higher or lower than your scope indicates, either increase or decrease the measurement on your scope's elevation adjustment dial. Read your scope's instructions for more precise details on your scope's adjustable settings.
-
Step 8
Use any of the adjustable settings equipment available on the handgun scope to customize the sight, if necessary. Your options will vary based on your model of handgun scope. A parallax adjustment switch or variable magnification option will allow you to aim at either longer or shorter distances.
