How to Make Butter With a Bosch Universal

Make your own butter at home with a Bosch Universal kitchen machine. Be prepared though--do not expect the butter to have the same yellow hue or salty flavor as the sticks you will find in the dairy section of your grocery store. Manufacturers add coloring and salt to increase the shelf life and eye appeal of the butter. Spread your fresh butter on top of homemade bread for a simple breakfast or dinner side. Instructions

    • 1

Pour the whipping cream into the bowl of the stand mixer on the Bosch Universal kitchen machine. Fix the whisk attachment to the central post inside the Bosch Universal's bowl.

    • 2

Place the lid of the kitchen machine over the bowl to prevent splatters. Start the mixer on high speed to begin whipping the cream.

    • 3

Continue to whip the cream until solid pieces of butter separate from the buttermilk inside. Stop the machine and pour the contents into the glass bowl or measuring cup.

    • 4

Press the wooden spoon against the solid butter pieces and tilt the bowl over a sink to discard the buttermilk. Save the buttermilk by pouring it into a resealable container for use in recipes or drinking, if desired.

    • 5

Pour 1/2 cup cold water over the butter and knead it into the solid butter with the wooden spoon. Pour off the excess liquid as it turns milky white. Do not save this liquid as it will not taste the same as the buttermilk first poured off the butter. Repeat five times to rinse out all of the bitter flavors that might remain from residual buttermilk.

    • 6

Knead in 1 to 2 tbsp. salt or other flavorings into the butter if desired with the wooden spoon. See the tips for butter flavorings ideas. Store the fresh butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer for up to one week.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fold 1/4 cup sugar, honey or maple syrup into the butter to make sweet butter. Add to the butter 2 to 4 tbsp. fresh chopped parsley, chives, basil or garlic to make savory herb butter.
