Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
- Straight pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- 1 yard of snap tape
-
Step 1
Measure your hips, waist and chest with the tape measure. Divide each of these measurements in half and add 2 inches (if your chest measures 36 inches, write down 20 inches).
-
Step 2
Fold the beach towel in half, right sides together, so the short sides meet. Starting at the top of the towel, mark off a section the same length as your chest measurement. Following the example in Step 1, you'd mark off 20 inches. Use pins to mark the beginning and end of this section, centering the section on the towel. Mark the waist and hips in the same manner.
-
Step 3
Cut away the excess toweling, leaving a 1-inch margin for a seam allowance. You should end up with two somewhat hourglass-shaped sections of towels. Sew these sections right sides together along one long side, following the curve of the hourglass and using a 1-inch seam allowance. Open this out and press the seam allowance open. Stitch down the seam allowance on either side. This will prevent the towel from fraying and will give your cover-up a more finished look.
-
Step 4
Sew a narrow hem on both of the unseamed sides of the cover-up.
-
Step 5
Open the snap tape. Pin the male side of the snap tape to the outside of one half of the cover-up, starting at the top edge. Pin the female side of the tape to the inside of the opposite half of the cover-up.
-
Step 6
Wrap the cover-up around you to check the fit. The snaps should meet. Move the male snap tape if necessary for a better fit. Sew the snap tape in place.
-
Step 7
Cut straps from the scraps of toweling you cut away earlier. Cut two pieces 2 inches wide by 12 inches long. Sew a narrow hem on either side of these straps, then sew the straps to the cover-up on the inside of the top and back.
