How to Plant a Voodoo Lily

Voodoo lilies are a rare bulb flower that can be grown in your home or backyard, if the conditions are favorable to the plant. Even though this flower is known for its strange smell (not at all like a flower) it only smells for a few hours when the bloom opens, and then the smell disperses. Because these rare flowers like specific environments, it is important to make sure that they are planted correctly in the right place.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Voodoo lily bulb(s)
  • Small trowel
  • Moist planting soil
  • Medium size clay planting pot with drainage
  1. Step 1

Fill the pot halfway with planting soil. Make sure the soil is a bit moist.

  2. Step 2

Place the bulb into the pot and cover it with soil. For smaller bulbs, make sure that the bulb is planted about 2 to 3 inches below the surface of the soil. For medium to large sized bulbs, plant at least 6 inches below the top of the soil. Make sure that the small part of the bulb is facing up.

  3. Step 3

Keep the bulb inside during the winter (dormant) months and let the soil dry out. Water lightly about once a month, but mainly keep the soil dry.
Once spring comes around, you can take the pot outside and water it regularly. Feed every two weeks during the spring and summer with a water soluble fertilizer. Make sure to keep the pot in the shade.
