How to Make a Barrel Grill
Many men and women love to cook on outdoor grills. There is just something about cooking meat and vegetables over the warm coals of an open fire--compared to cooking on the stove indoors--that is primal and satisfying. However, a good grill can be quite expensive depending on the size and features you seek. Luckily, it is possible to build a barrel grill. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Drill
- 55-gallon steel drum
- 3 metal cooking grates
- Metal basket
- 1/2-inch bolts
Instructions

1
Light a large fire inside of the barrel and allow it to burn for several hours to burn off any residue from the inside of the barrel.
-
2
Drill several holes in the lid of the grill barrel to act as exhaust vents.

-
3
Measure two feet from the bottom of the barrel and drill three holes around the perimeter of the barrel. Insert three half-inch bolts into the holes to act as a platform for one of the metal grates.
-
4
Measure six inches above the first metal grate, drill three more holes in the perimeter of the barrel and install a second grate.
-
5
Drill four holes in the bottom perimeter of the can to allow air to flow into your charcoal. In order to use the grill, load the metal basket with charcoal and light it. Lower the basket into the bottom of the can, load meat onto the two upper grates, and put the lid on the barrel. Allow the grill to cook until the meat is thoroughly cooked (measure this with a meat thermometer if you are unsure).
