The PSP, or PlayStation Portable, is a handheld video gaming system from Sony. The PSP has a variety of functions, including playing games, video and audio files, and allowing the user to access the Internet. If any of the device's internal components become nonfunctioning or need to be replaced, it may be necessary to take the PSP apart.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small Phillip's screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Remove the battery pack from the back of the PSP. Remove the plastic cover that hides the battery from the back of the PSP. Lift the battery pack out of its housing. Once that is done, unscrew the revealed screw(s). Peel back the bottom left corner of the sticker inside of the battery housing to reveal one final screw you will need to remove.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the screws from the top-right and bottom-right corners of the back of the device. There is also one screw on the underside of the PSP that will need to be removed. Take off the front faceplate of the PSP, which these three screws were holding in place.

  3. Step 3

Lift and remove the rubber strip from the the bottom of the LCD screen. Follow the strip to where it connects to the PSP's body; there will be a small plastic tab that holds it in place that needs to be lifted up.

  4. Step 4

Lift the LCD screen from the PSP gently. Be sure not to pull up too hard or you could risk damaging the two wires that connect the screen to the motherboard. Carefully, set the screen aside, follow the two wires back to their bases and pull up on the small plastic tabs that hold the wires in place.

  5. Step 5

Remove the metal plate that covers the device's motherboard. Do this by simply unscrewing the screws that hold the piece in place. There is a screw at each corner of the protective covering. After the metal piece is removed, you can now lift the motherboard free from the PSP.

Tips & Warnings
  • Opening the PSP will void your warranty. Make sure the problem is not covered by the warranty, or that your warranty has expired, before opening the device.
