A bunk bed is a great space saver and it makes living with another person in the same room much easier. However, there are times when the other person may move out and you are still left with the bunk bed. While you can look for another roommate, many prefer to have the room to themselves. In this instance, there is really no need to keep the bunk bed as is so you can convert it to form one large bed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bunk bed
  • Tape measure
  • Extra Person to help
  • Rope
  • Flat or phillips screwdriver (if needed)
  1. Step 1

Use the tape measure to measure the length and width of the bed. In order to convert the bunk beds to make one large bed you will need enough room to place them side by side. Taking the measurements of the bed, measure an area of the room where you can easily place the two bunk beds side by side.

  2. Step 2

Clear the area that you wish to place your large converted bunk bed. The easiest thing to do in this situation is to clear the area right next to the bunk bed. This will save you time and energy because you will only need to clean and clear a smaller area.

  3. Step 3

Remove the mattress and anything else on the top bunk. If there is a box spring as well, be sure to remove this also. Removing the mattress and any other material on the top bunk will make it easier when you remove the frame of the top bunk. Some bunk beds are assembled with a ladder attached to it for easy access to the top bunk. If this is attached you will need to unscrew this as well.

  4. Step 4

Loosen any clamps that may be securing the bottom bunk to the top bunk. Typically bunk beds are stacked together right at the legs. This means that you can easily remove the top bunk from the bottom bunk. You will usually find that the legs are hollow on the top bunk while the top of the legs on the bottom bunk have pegs in them, which is how they are stacked and secured. The pegs sticking out of the top of the legs on the bottom bunk insert easily into the hollow legs of the top bunk.

  5. Step 5

Grab one end of the frame on the top bunk and have the extra person grab the opposite end of the frame. Slowly lift the top bunk off of the bottom bunk and place it side by side on the floor are that you have cleared. Push the beds together so that they are aligned on the long side flush against each other.

  6. Step 6

Tie the legs and the frame of the bed to each other. You can use the rope to tie one leg on the one bunk bed to the leg on the other bunk bed that is lined up next to it. You can also tie the frame together to help keep it securely in place during use. You can now put the mattress back on to the bunk and use the converted bunk bed as one large bed.
