How to Read an Old Postage Scale
If you have an old-fashioned, or analog postage scale, you can easily learn how to use it. If you're used to reading from a digital scale, you might find it confusing initially, but you'll find that most analog scales typically have a meter on them that resembles a clock, but unlike a clock, the hands only move when something is put on the scale. If you know how to tell time, you can learn how to read a scale.

1
Set the scale down on a flat surface. An ideal location would be a wood, metal or otherwise solid desk surface.
-
2
Take the package or envelope and place it on the top part of the scale. Typically this is a rectangle that sits on the top of scale. The indicator on the scale should move.
-
-
3
Wait for the indicator to stop moving, then make note of the number that the indicator lands on. If the indicator lands in between two numbers, approximate where it is. For instance, when you put a package on the scale and the indicator falls in between the numbers 2 and 3, the package weighs 2.5 pounds.

4
Remove the package. The indicator should return to the Zero on top.

Tips & Warnings
Analog scales can measure different things. Some measure weights in ounces, while others measure pounds. You may want to consider buying two different scales: a pound-based scale for heavy items such as packages, and an ounce-based scale for lighter things such as envelopes. Every few months, you'll need to check to see if the scale is properly calibrated. Use the measuring weights that come with the scale. If you need to calibrate it, consult your manual on how to do so.
Because of the calibration required for the scale, many people recommend purchasing a digital scale instead of an analog one. Digital scales are also much easier to read than analog ones.
