Citrus oils, especially those found in oranges, contain something called linalool, a component that is lethal to fleas but does not harm pets or humans. The thick white layer on the inside of the citrus peel contains linalool. It kills fleas by destroying their exoskeletons. You can make an organic spray using the peels from citrus fruits to rid your cat of fleas.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One to two cups of orange peels
  • One to two cups of other citrus peels, like lemons, grapefruits or tangerines
  • Saucepan
  • Blender
  • Colander
  • Bowl
  • Spray bottles
  1. Step 1

Peel the oranges and the other citrus fruits. You can save the fruit to eat or juice it now to add to the mixture. The more citrus aroma and essence present, the more beneficial the spray will be.

  2. Step 2

Put all the peels along with any pulp or juice into a pan and cover with at least 2 cups of water. Heat to boiling, then let simmer for about an hour or two.

  3. Step 3

Turn off the heat. Allow the peels and mixture to cool completely in the pan. Do not drain.

  4. Step 4

Place the boiled peels and some of the water into a blender in small amounts. Blend on low speed until it forms a thick, pulpy mixture. Repeat the process with remaining peels and juice until it is all blended. Pour the mixture into a strainer or colander and allow the juice to flow into a bowl.

  5. Step 5

Combine the strained juice with 1 cup of leftover water from the pan. Add a small amount of plain water if necessary to make a sprayable consistency. If the mixture does not have a strong citrus scent, repeat the process using more peels until it does.

  6. Step 6

Strain the mixture one more time to remove any solids. Pour the mix into a spray bottle. Refrigerate any remaining juice and label it so no one drinks it by mistake. Use it to refill the spray bottle.

  7. Step 7

Spray your cat lightly with the citrus spray, massaging it into the fur for full coverage. Repeat as necessary to kill fleas. This is completely safe and nontoxic.
