How to Repair a Lamp Cord

Lamp cords are always in the way. Whether they've been stepped on or have damaged by furniture, it's common for cords to need repair or replacement.

Things You'll Need:

    Fixing the Cord

  1. Step 1

    Remove the broken/frayed cord from the socket and cut off the plug, using wire cutters.

  2. Step 2

    Disassemble the socket, removing the harp and any other additional fixtures such as lampshade.

  3. Step 3

    Use tape or a piece of string to fasten the new cord to the old one.

  4. Step 4

    Pull the newly attached cord through the center rod of the lamp as you withdraw the old one.

  5. Step 5

    Once the new cord is through the center rod, cut off the old cord and discard it.

  6. Step 6

    Tie a knot on the new cord, with roughly 2.5 inches of cord to work with on either side.

  7. Step 7

    Using the wire stripper, strip 1/2 inch of insulation from each wire.

  8. Step 8

    Twist the newly unstripped ends of each with with your fingers, then form hooks with the pliers. Wrap those hooks around each terminal screw.

  9. Step 9

    Reassemble the socket, put the harp back together, put your lampshade on and plug in the new cord.
