Shadow boxes are a great way to decorate your home, but they weigh significantly more than small pictures and other traditional wall-hangings. In order to safely hang one so that you can have peace of mind and protect your shadow box, you need to properly anchor it to the wall.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Drywall or masonry anchors
- Electric drill
Determine the weight of the shadow box. Weigh yourself, then step on the scale while holding the shadow box. Subtracting the first figure from the second will give you the weight of the shadow box. Buy either drywall anchors or masonry anchors (depending on the type of wall that you have) that are rated to support this weight.
Have a helper hold the shadow box up to the wall in your preferred location. Lightly draw a line along the top of the shadow box, from one end to the other.
Take the shadow box down, turn it over, and measure the distance from the top to the center point of the hanging hooks. Also measure the distance between the center point of each hook, as well as the distance between each hook and the side edges of the shadow box.
Use the line you drew in Step 2 and the measurements from Step 3 to mark the locations for the center points of the hanging hooks.
Following the specifications on the packaging that contained the anchors, select an appropriately sized drill bit and drill a hole in each marked location. Tap the anchors into the holes with a small hammer.
Drive screws into the anchors with a screwdriver or drill. Leave about 1/2 inch of each screw and its head exposed.
Team up with your helper to place the shadow box's hanging hooks over the heads of the screws in the wall. You are finished.
