How to Design a Motel Room

Motel rooms are designed to be a soothing place away from home where someone will be staying from one night to a few weeks. When you think of motel rooms you think of comfort and functionality, and these points are what you should have in mind when designing a motel room. Find furniture that is durable and color palettes that can take some wear and will fit all tastes. Remember that a guest's room is a place to relax and find a few comforts from home. Motel room design takes plenty of thought and planning. See how other motels design and decorate their spaces, speak with design companies or independent designers and figure out how they can help you with your ideas.

Do your homework by checking out other motel rooms. Visit their websites to see how their rooms are designed and get a good idea of what you would like your room to look like. Speak with interior designers to help you flesh out your thoughts. Contact architects, suppliers and contractors to get your vision fleshed out.

Use durable furniture that will last a long time. Beds, tables, chairs and desks should be comfortable and sturdy. Speak to suppliers for better deals on furniture and to help you choose the right furnishings.

    • 3

Unless you have a theme, such as woodland retreat, try to pick neutral colors for paint and carpeting. The room should be designed with peace and comfort in mind.

    • 4

Place appliances in the room that add to a guest's comfort. The addition of a television, air conditioner, coffeemaker, refrigerator and microwave make rooms more like home. Having these appliances in the room means that the guest can stay in the comfort of their room.

Because lighting is essential in a motel room, purchase lights that can brighten up specific areas of the room, and place bedside reading lights so that they do not inconvenience the person on the other side of the bed. Make sure you have enough lighting placed around the room. Lamps and reading lights give the room a better ambiance than overhead lights.

Have plentiful outlets that can handle an array of gadgets. Travelers come with laptops, cellphones, music devices and PDAs, so make sure the room can handle these devices

Tips & Warnings

  • Stock motel rooms with comfortable towels, sheets and pillows. Add special touches such as soaps and other toiletries, in case the guests have forgotten theirs. Cleanliness is the first thing a guest will look for, so make sure that rooms are neat, tidy and very clean.
