Customizing your wedding invitations to match the color, theme or another element from your wedding adds a personal touch to the invitations. Your personalities or something unusual or special about your relationship are good places to start when thinking about how to customize your invitations. Your invitations are the first glimpse into your wedding that your guests will have, therefore choose an invitation design and style that will ultimately complement your wedding.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wedding invitation catalogs or samples
  • Internet access
  • Folder
  1. Step 1

Browse different invitations from a supplier's website, samples or invitation catalogs. Look for styles, shapes, colors, fonts and designs that appeal to you and save them in a special folder.

  2. Step 2

Choose a shape for your invitations, based on the theme of your wedding or an element from the wedding that you'd like to focus on. Leaf shaped invitations would work for fall weddings, flower shapes for spring or any other shape you desire. Invitations can also be square, rectangular, round, oval or heart shaped.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the layout for the invitations. If there is a particular fold you like, or if you prefer invitations that have interior pockets to hold extra inserts such as maps, then take that into consideration.

  4. Step 4

Pick your card stock based on color, thickness and texture. White, ivory or ecru are common colors for formal affairs, however you can choose any color that complements your wedding. Gritty textures may emphasize a beach wedding, whereas plain textures may work better for embossed lettering.

  5. Step 5

Determine which picture or symbol you'd like to use and if you'd like to include an overlay or have a graphic on the front, with text inside. You can use a picture of the two of you, interlocking wedding bands, wedding bells, doves, hearts, flowers, scrolls or any other design you can think of.

  6. Step 6

Write out the wording of your choice, including any phrases, poems or verses that appeal to you and your fiance. The wording of the invitations should match the formality of the wedding, as guests will use your invitation to figure out how to dress for your affair.

  7. Step 7

Choose the color and font of your text, and whether you want it engraved, embossed or printed flush with the card stock.

  8. Step 8

Order a proof of your wedding invitation six months in advance if possible. That will give you enough time to verify all of the information and spelling is accurate, place your order and still have time to send them out six to eight weeks before the wedding.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're printing your own invitations, purchase your desired card stock and print a test invitation instead of step 8.
  • Proofread your invitations before placing your order or printing them.
